A small slip of muscle arising form the lateral side of the distal part of the long extensor ends in a fifth tendon which passes under the inferior extensor retinaculum and attaches to the base of the fifth metatarsal bone. This is the peroneus tertius (fibular) muscle (m. peroneus [fibularis]tertius). It is considered the first stage of the separation of a muscle new to man (it is absent in the apes), the pronator of the foot that is necessary for walking on two limbs.
